So you have updated your CV and applied for your dream job now all you have to do is get offered the position! Remember if you have got this far in the selection process, you have already proved your suitability on paper for the position and now it’s time to do the same again, this time face to face with the interviewer. The employer is obviously interested in you so it's now all up to you to impress upon your potential employer that you're the best person for the role. Here are some tips on how you can do that:
Before you go for the interview:
• Research the employer - most companies will have a web site or a company brochure.
• Make sure you fully understand the position you are interviewing for.
• If you know somebody who works there or who has worked there, ask them about the company culture, philosophies and structure.
• Read through your CV or application form before the interview, as the interviewer is likely to base the majority of their questions on the information you supplied.
• Try to be up to date on current affairs/topics related to the company in question, so listen to the news or read the paper.
• Ensure that you can describe yourself and your experiences in and out of work—be prepared to give examples of occasions when you showed or used particular skills, knowledge and attributes relevant to the position – don’t be afraid to practice these answers before you go in.
• Always dress to impress. You should portray an image of professionalism, confidence and competence.
• Give yourself ample travel time to get there.
During the Interview:
• Remember the interview starts the minute you walk in the company doors.
• Have a positive attitude you need to believe that you have something to offer and be confident in yourself and your capabilities for the job.
• When asked a question, listen carefully to what is being asked pause if necessary to compose a concise and relevant answer. Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat or clarify the question if you did not understand it the first time round.
• Be aware of your body language such as eye contact, facial expression, and gestures. A good firm handshake is necessary.
• Volunteer information and examples and elaborate on an issue if prompted by the interviewer.
Take notes if necessary and don’t be afraid to ask questions
